Husky Football Opens Season With Win

The St. Cloud State football team kicked off its 2013 season with a 49-35 win at Southwest Minnesota State Saturday night. The Huskies gained over 500 yards of total team offense in the season-opening victory.

The Huskies jumped out to a 14-0 lead after one quarter, thanks to a two yard touchdown run by quarterback Phil Klaphake and an eight yard touchdown catch by Damon Treat.

After the Mustangs scored early in the second quarter to cut the SCSU lead to 14-7, the Huskies struck back with another Klaphake TD scramble to make the score 21-7.

However, the SWMNST would score 14 unanswered points before halftime to tie the game at 21 heading into the locker room.

The Huskies came out of the locker room and scored a pair of touchdowns within the first two minutes of the third quarter. Eli Shoemaker caught a 67 yard pass from Klaphake on SCSU's first possession of the second half for a 28-21 lead.

After a Mustang punt, the Huskies went back to work and drove 39 yards in three plays to take a 35-21 lead. SWMNST scored one more touchdown to make it a 35-28 game, but SCSU finished with 14 unanswered points to earn the win.

Klaphake finished the game 15-26 for 291 yards with 2 touchdowns and one interception. The senior also rushed for 81 yards on 13 carries with two touchdowns.

SCSU's Ledell White led all rushers with 116 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. Treat and Shoemaker each had monster games for the Huskies, with Treat catching seven passes for 129 yards and a touchdown and Shoemaker pulling in five catches for 136 yards.
