ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Gov. Mark Dayton says he supports letting Minnesota voters register online, but believes Secretary of State Mark Ritchie should have had the Legislature's OK before implementing the system.

Ritchie's office launched online voter registration last month. Dayton, a fellow Democrat, says Tuesday it's a good idea but should have legislative support.

The system can be used by new registrants or by those who want to update existing registration.

Some leading Republican lawmakers as well as the Democratic chairwoman of a Senate committee on election law also say lawmakers should sign off on it.

Ritchie's office has pointed to a law that recognizes electronic records in government as justification. His spokesman did not return immediately return a call seeking comment on Dayton's remarks.
