Bill To Authorize Fargo-Moorhead Diversion On Senate Docket
FARGO, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Sen. John Hoeven and Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar say a bill to authorize a Red River flood diversion project should reach the Senate floor Monday.
The nearly $2 billion proposal is part of the 2013 Water Resources Development Act. It would still need to go before the U.S. House.
Authorization means construction can begin, but the federal funding will need to be appropriated each year to cover the cost of construction, which is shared by local, state and federal governments.
Hoeven, a Republican, and Klobuchar, a Democrat, say they have spoken with President Obama about the project and he is aware of flooding problems in the region.
Hoeven and Klobuchar were in Fargo on Wednesday to review flood protection efforts.
