After Concordia Lowers Tuition, Enrollment Soars

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Concordia University in St. Paul has slashed its annual tuition by $10,000, leading to a dramatic 65 percent jump in the number of new students.

A report says the college rolled back its undergraduate tuition this fall from almost $30,000 to just under $20,000. The result is a record in the number of both freshmen and transfers.

School officials say they were offering so much in financial aid that it made sense to just lower the sticker price, which was scaring away potential students.

Since the decision was announced last year, the number of campus visits - and applications - rose. Dorms are full for the first time in years.

Freshman Ben Herwig of Portage, Wis., says the price cut made Concordia especially appealing.
