Years Later, Minnesota Disposing of I-35W Bridge Steel

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) – In a few weeks, the Minnesota Department of Transportation will begin parceling out tons of steel from the collapsed Interstate 35W bridge.

They’re being guided by a new state law and paying special attention to the requests of survivors from the deadly collapse, which happened six years ago Thursday.

Whatever isn’t claimed by Thanksgiving will be sold for scrap.

The state’s bridge engineer says 30 to 40 people have stepped forward so far to reserve pieces.

People can choose among bolts that are the size of a pen or opt for larger hunks. They will be free of charge, but must be retrieved.

Parts will also go to historians and college civil engineering institutes that want pieces as teaching tools.
