MINNEAPOLIS - The Minneapolis woman who was fatally struck by a car while crossing a busy downtown street had left work early because of a snowstorm.

Fifty-six-year-old Rachel David and her co-workers were let out of work early on Tuesday as heavy snow hit the Twin Cities.

David worked for Care Providers of Minnesota. Company official Doug Beardsley says the company had closed its offices midafternoon to give its staff more time to get home during the snowfall.

Beardsley says David did not drive and used light rail and buses to get around.

David was in the crosswalk while crossing Hennepin Avenue when a vehicle struck her while turning. She died on the way to a hospital.

Police say the driver stopped immediately and is cooperating with authorities.
