Wild Embarrassed By Edmonton In Home Finale

Needing only a win against a team eliminated from playoff contention weeks ago, the Wild laid an egg at Xcel Energy Center on Friday night in their home finale.

The Oilers topped the Wild 6-1 in front of a crowd of 19,900.

The Wild's Zenon Konopka came out swinging, getting into a fight with Edmonton's Mike Brown just two seconds into the game. However, it was the Oilers who gained the momentum when Cory Potter scored just :27 into the first for a 1-0 lead.

Edmonton made it 2-0 with Taylor Hall's unassisted goal at 8:02, then took a three goal lead into the first intermission via Potter's second goal of the period at 18:38.

Jordan Eberle's shot under the crossbar beat backup goalie Josh Harding at 4:09 of the second period as the Oilers continued to pour it on. Nail Yakupov scored a pair of goals in the second period for Edmonton to make it 6-0 after two periods.

Mikko Koivu scored the Wild's only goal halfway through the third period.

The Wild remain in the eighth and final playoff spot but now have just one game remaining. They are tied with Columbus for the eighth spot, but own the tiebreaker over the Blue Jackets.

Columbus hosts Nashville on Saturday night.

The Detroit Red Wings are in seventh place, one point ahead of Minnesota. The Wings will play at Dallas tomorrow.
