WAITE PARK -- The Waite Park police department is looking at adding a body camera system to their officers later this year.

Police Chief Dave Bentrud says at the moment they have not purchased any body cameras but are continuing to research what would work best for their department.

The camera would attach to an officers uniform and record what happens when an officer is in the field.

Bentrud says he has talked with other departments around the state that use body cameras. He says his main questions with using them are how long they need to store the data.

Bentrud says the state legislature may come up with some guidelines on how long departments need to keep the data collected.

He adds while the cameras would be helpful to their department, just because they have them doesn't mean they will capture every detail.

Staff and other city officials are on board with what they police department is looking at doing.

If Waite Park does get body camera's they would be the first department within the St. Cloud metro to use them.
