WAITE PARK -- Waite Park officials got a first look at some of the security improvements for the council chambers Wednesday afternoon.

During a work session the council was presented with designs, and costs for audio, visual, and security improvements to provide a safer environment for staff and audience members.

City Administrator Shaunna Johnson says with most of their technology over 20 years old they felt they would upgrade their systems with the remodel.

Some of the audio/visual designs call for several new monitors, wired and wireless microphones, speakers, security cameras and bluetooth capabilities.

New designs in the council chambers would call for a U-shaped desk with bullet proof panels, with staff sitting to the sides of the council members. The door entering the council chambers would also have bullet proof glass.

The current set up has several city staff with their backs towards the audience and the doors into the council chambers.

Cost for the chamber remodel is estimated at $140,000 with a $30,000 contingency fund, while cost for the audio/video upgrades would be over $160,000. However both are subject to change.

No action was taken however the improvements would be brought for approval at a future council meeting.

Last year Waite Park made security upgrades to their administrative office.
