Funeral services celebrating the life of Violet Jeanette Swanson, 97, formerly of Minneapolis and Bemidji will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 22, 2016 at Hillside Funeral Chapel, 2610 19th Avenue NE, Minneapolis, 55413. Vi passed away on Sunday, April 17, 2016 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home Care Center in Sauk Rapids. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Minneapolis.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday at Hillside Funeral Chapel. Arrangements are with Daniel Funeral Home, St. Cloud.

Vi was born on February 26, 1919 in Minneapolis to the late Melker H. and Mabel Smith. She married Robert Allen Swanson on June 26, 1941 in Minneapolis and they resided in the Twin Cities until moving to Bemidji for their retirement. Vi moved to Sauk Rapids in 2015 to be close to family after Bob’s passing. They were active members of Bethel Lutheran Church in Bemidji.

Vi enjoyed providing foster care for infants during her early marriage and in retirement she enjoyed quilting and making baby layettes for missions. Music was also a big part of her and Bob’s lives and Vi loved to sing old church hymns. Fishing with the grandchildren was a favorite pastime.

She is survived by her son, James Alan (Judy) Swanson of Sauk Rapids; five grandchildren, John Robert (Viki) Swanson, James Lawrence (Elizabeth) Swanson, Christopher Ross (Dawn) Brown, Matthew Dereck Brown, Rachel Allyn Brown; eight great grandchildren, Joseph (Monica), Matthias, Esther and Robert Swanson, Jackson, Theodore, Peyton Violet and Adrian Brown; and three great -great grandchildren, Enoch, Kateri and Naomi Swanson.

Vi was preceded in death by her husband, Bob in 2015; daughter, Susan Brown; and two brothers, Kenneth and Burtron Smith.
