MONTICELLO  (AP) - An update to a story we first told you about on Tuesday: Some Minnesota school districts are scrapping the traditional spring break in favor of some extended weekends.

The Monticello School District is dropping the weeklong break in favor of a long weekend in April. To the north, Roseau is also opting for a weekend break to coincide with the annual high school hockey tournament in St. Paul.  Families in Minneapolis are being asked to respond to a survey that asks if they want an abbreviated spring break in favor of a shorter school year.

Lee Hurd has a daughter who's a senior at Sartell High School. Hurd says she's concerned about taking away the opportunity for charitable or mission work in foreign countries. Hurd is leading a group to the Dominican Republic this spring to set up basketball courts for underprivileged children.
