MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The University of Minnesota's athletics director is resigning.

The school announced Friday that Norwood Teague submitted his resignation after three years on the job. President Eric Kaler accepted Teague's resignation effective immediately.

Kaler was expected to address the surprise resignation Friday afternoon.

Teague took over the Gophers' athletics program in 2012 after spending six years at Virginia Commonwealth University. He took over for longtime athletics director Joel Maturi, who retired.

Teague made several high-profile moves during his short tenure including the hiring of basketball coach Richard Pitino.
