ST. CLOUD -- With the new school year fast approaching at St. Cloud State University, faculty are busy preparing for in-coming students.

SCSU Interim President Ashish Vaidya held his first state-of-the-university Convocation Address this (Wednesday) morning. He says this year SCSU is putting a strong focus in university engagement.

"There are two aspects to our engagement. The first is what we call the completion agenda, making sure students come back every year, getting the advice they need. The second piece is engaging the campus itself. We've done a great job over the years but there could be more we do with each other as a team," says Vaidaya.

Vaidaya says as the school year begins it's important to also focus on short term goals and not always look towards the long term future.

"We have to set milestones. It's not about making this big change every five years, there are things we can do every few weeks, months and so forth. It's not saying we need to do everything in one year, but we need to make progress on multiple fronts moving forward," says Vaidaya.

Vaidaya became interim president back in June after the unexpected death of Earl Potter III.

He says while he hasn't been at the university for very long, the out-flowing community and faculty support has helped in the transition process.

St. Cloud State University's freshmen move-in day will be tomorrow (Thursday) and classes begin Monday.
