ST. PAUL (AP) – A panel of experts will judge nearly 300 wines at the University of Minnesota for the fifth annual International Cold Climate Wine Competition.

The wine comes from 66 commercial wineries in 12 states and Canada.

Friday’s competition is the only event of its kind for wines made from fruit grown in cold climates. It’s a partnership between the Minnesota Grape Growers Association and the university, which developed several of the cold-hardy grapes used to make the wines in the competition.

The awards in 31 categories will be based on blind tastings by 21 judges, including prominent wine writers, restaurateurs, retailers and wine educators.

A recent study says Minnesota’s wine industry faces challenges to keep growing now that the novelty of wine produced in such a frosty climate is wearing off.
