ALBERT LEA (AP) — A southeastern Minnesota man has died after a tree fell onto a canopy that he was standing under, causing a metal part of it to hit him on the head.

The Freeborn County Sheriff's Office says 70-year-old Daniel Crawford of Byron was killed in the accident Monday afternoon. Crawford was under the canopy as others tried to pull down a dead tree.

The sheriff's office says the dead tree got lodged in another tree, and both fell. One hit the canopy, and Crawford was knocked unconscious by the portion of the canopy that hit him.

According to the sheriff's office, people with Crawford and a deputy at the scene tried resuscitating Crawford, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
