Early in the morning on Sunday, October 18th a struggle started between a hospital patient, 50-year-old Danny Hammond, and a Sheriff's Deputy who was assigned to guard him. Sixty-year-old Steven Sandberg was shot and killed by Hammond, who used Sandberg's own gun.

Hammond was tazed by hospital security, and he later died as well. No one else was hurt in the incident. It happened in a patient room on the 5th floor of the hospital.

Sandberg was a member of the Aitkin County Sheriff's Office since 1991.

Five days later, on October 23rd, Sandberg was laid to rest in his hometown of Aitkin. Over 5,000 people attended his funeral.
