Things to Remember When Getting Ready for a Date

It’s Friday night. Date night. Here are some things to think about before you leave the house.

Transportation

Once I was on a date and I accidentally got drunk. Yes, it was by accident. I couldn’t afford a 35 mile cab ride and there was no way I was going to call my parents because I knew they would come and get me, but not without a lecture. The gentleman I was with insisted he take me back to my apartment and swore there would be no funny stuff. After another embarrassing event at dinner where his card was declined when he tried to pay, I figured we’d be even, so I reluctantly accepted. Thankfully he was telling the truth, but that could have ended very differently. Bottom line: If you’re depending on someone else to give you a ride home, have a back up plan.

Remember What They Said

What did the two of you talk about on the phone or via text and email? I know it’s tempting to Facebook stalk your date before you go out so you can see who their friends are and what they spend their time doing, but whatever you do, do not talk about things you found out from Facebook or Twitter. Talk about whatever it is you guys talked about before you met in person tonight. Ask questions and when they answer it, don’t say, “Oh yeah! I saw that on Facebook!” You’re going to look like a crazy person. Unless, of course, you’re Facebook friends, then it’s OK.

Smell Good

There’s a rule I like to stick to when spritzing on a fragrance: “A scent should be detected, not announced.” I do one spray on each side and one in my hair. Your smell should be something I notice when I get close to you. I shouldn’t be able to smell you from 10 feet away. Perfumes and colognes smell nice when they aren’t overpowering. Also, brush your teeth and guys, make sure your nails are clipped and clean. Long dirty nails skeev me out.

Have A Plan

Don’t wait until the two of you get together to decide what you want to do. There is nothing sexier than a man (or woman) who knows what they want. If you’re just starting with dinner and then deciding what to do later, know what you want to do, so when you’re asked you don’t say, “I don’t know. What do you want to do?” Say, “How about we take a walk and then go grab a cup of coffee or glass of wine?” Also, be open to compromise.

Have An Excuse

So, the date isn’t going that well for you and you need an out. You need to come up with a better excuse than “I have to work tomorrow.” It’s lame, over used and fake. Be honest, or go to the movies. It’s two hours where you don’t have to make awkward small talk. After that you can part ways.
