Lawmakers in greater Minnesota want to cut farmers' property tax bills for construction projects. Rural lawmakers say farmers pay $10 for every $1 city residents pay when schools, cities and counties charge for new projects because they own more land.

The Minnesota House has passed a bill that would let schools consider teacher performance in layoff decisions. State law currently requires that seniority be the only consideration. Opponents say the bill would make it easier for districts to layoff teachers with high salaries.
