The Dakota War Started On – ‘This Date In Central Minnesota History’

On a bright Sunday afternoon, August 17,1862, four young Dakota hunters were passing through Acton in Western Meeker County. These young Indians came across some hen’s eggs along a fence on Robinson Jones homestead. They were acquainted with Jones and his wife as they ran a combination post office, lodging place and store in Acton, and it was obvious that Jones’ hen had laid the eggs.

St. Cloud Post Office Established On – ‘This Date In Central Minnesota History’

Though St. Cloud had begun to be settled in the early part of the 1850s, it wasn’t until 1855 that it got its first post office. This happened when Frank Sisson was appointed postmaster on August 16, 1855.

Matthew Hall Lumber Starts – On ‘This Date In Central Minnesota History’

Mathew Hall emigrated from Germany in 1882. When he arrived here he began working for Lt. Gov. Charles Gilman, who gave him in lumber in exchange for wages. Gilman encouraged Hall to open his own lumber yard. When he had a small supply, Hall rented and later purchased two lots near Seventh Avenue and Second Street North. His business continues in this same place today! The first sale, on July 29, 1889, was for $2.80.

Officials of the Jefferson Highway Association arrive in St. Cloud. The officials were greeted by a large number of cars lined along Third Avenue South to welcome them. Official Car No. 1 of the Jefferson Highway Relay Sociability tour turned the corner at Seventh Street at 1:49 scheduled time.

When a plot of land came up for sale across the street from the home of Bill and Virginia Clemens, they purchased and donated the land to the City of St. Cloud Park Department. July 20, 1989 is the date of the approved motion for the rose garden to be name for Virginia Clemens, its muse.

St. Cloud’s Middle Town Started – On ‘This Date In Central Minnesota History’

John L. Wilson, the “Father of St. Cloud”, purchased a section of land in central Minnesota for $100. This is where Middle Town (St. Cloud) would develop. The first town-site location at St. Cloud, covering what came to be known as “Middle Town,” now the business center of the city, was purchased on July 19, 1853 by John L. Wilson.

Stearns County Fair Moved Permanently To Sauk Centre – On ‘This Date In Central Minnesota History’

Stearns County Fair held at the current fair ground in Sauk Centre for the first time. The holding of fairs was abandoned until 1903 when a new association was organized, a 28 acre tract of land was purchased in Sauk Centre and preparations were made. The new fair grounds and race track were formally opened July 3, 1903.

St. Cloud’s Zapp Bank Was Incorporated – On ‘This Date In Central Minnesota History’

John Zapp opened Zapp’s Abstract and Loan Bank which was incorporated in St. Cloud on July 1st, 1907. Pioneer settlers who had accumulated some money began to leave it with Zapp, who would give them a receipt and place the money in his safe in the Register of Deeds office.
