The proposal to build a new Minnesota Vikings stadium in Ramsey County is running into stiff opposition from elected officials in its largest city. Six of seven St. Paul City Council members oppose a proposed half-cent county sales tax to help fund construction of a stadium in Arden Hills.
The Mississippi River at St. Paul is predicted to crest at 19.2 feet on Wednesday, but city officials say they are prepared. The river is at what is considered major flood stage, but all the city's protective measures are in place up to 23 feet.
Construction crews are starting a $243 million renovation that will turn St. Paul's historic Union Depot back into a hub for trains and buses. Demolition begins Tuesday after a groundbreaking ceremony with elected officials including U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum and St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman. Crews will start clearing space for train tracks and bus lanes.
