The St. Cloud Apollo boys basketball team lost 67-62 to Orono in overtime in the Class 3A State tournament quarterfinals Wednesday afternoon at Williams Arena. Apollo led by 18 points with 14:11 left but couldn't hold the lead. The Eagles got 2 free throws with :05 left from senior guard Ibrahim Abukar. Jordan Smith led Orono with 29 points including 2 key throws in overtime to clinch the win.

Apollo Falls In Overtime In State Quarterfinals

The Apollo Eagles boys basketball team lost 67-62 in overtime to 3rd seeded Orono at Williams Arena Wednesday afternoon in the Class 3A State Tournament quarterfinals. The Eagles led by as many as 18 points with 14:11 remaining couldn't hold the lead in regulation. Ibrahim Abukar made 2 free throws with :05 left in regulation to force overtime. Jordan Smith made a pair of free throws with :19 left in overtime to give Orono a 4-point lead. Smith led Orono with 29 points.

The St. Cloud Apollo boys basketball team plays in the Class 3A State tournament quarterfinals today at 4pm at Williams Arena against 3rd seeded Orono. Hear the game today on AM 1240-WJON with Jay Caldwell calling the play-by-play. The Eagles are 25-4 and so is Orono. The two teams played December 29 at the Granite City Classic at Apollo with Orono winning 62-55. Apollo led for much of the game.

Apollo's Kessler Says Abukar Won't Play Wednesday

Apollo boys basketball coach Dean Kessler said Monday senior point guard Ibrahim Abukar will not play Wednesday when the Eagles play Orono in the Class 3A State Tournament Quarterfinals at Williams Arena. Abukar will have surgery this morning to extract his bone marrow to give it to his 13-year old sister who's in need of a bone marrow transplant.

The St. Cloud Apollo boys basketball team will play 3rd seeded Orono Wednesday afternoon at 4pm in the Class 3A State tournament quarterfinals at Williams Arena. Hear the game on WJON with Jay Caldwell calling the action. The Eagles did not get a seed when the pairings were announced despite being ranked #4 in the most recent Class 3A poll. Orono beat Apollo head to head in the Granite City Classic in December.

Tip-off tonight at 7pm, pregame on WJON at 6:55 with Jay Caldwell and Tom Fenton. The Eagles are the top seed in the section and are 24-4 while Detroit Lakes is seeded 3rd in the section and is 21-7.

The Holiday tournaments are here. Apollo will host the boys basketball Breakdown Granite City Classic starting Tuesday. The first game begins at 3pm when Rocori plays Duluth East at 3pm followed by Orono vs. Minnetonka at 4:45, then Apple Valley and St. Cloud Tech at 6:30 followed by Apollo vs. Sartell-St. Stephen at 8:15pm.
