The St. Cloud State Football team began the season with a 32-19 loss at home to the University of Sioux Falls Thursday night. SCSU trailed 29-13 at halftime. St. Cloud State quarterback Phil Klaphake of Princeton and defensive back Marvin Mathews of Roseville are the 2012 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Preseason Offensive and Defensive football players of the year. The players are chosen by the NSIC coaches. Klaphake is a 6'1 185 pound junior who's been a 3-year starter at quarterback for SCSU. Mathews is a 6'0 197 pound senior who was named first team all NSIC last season among other honors.

The St. Cloud State football team lost 48-38 in the first round of the NCAA Division II Super Region #3 Saturday afternoon at Husky Stadium in St. Cloud. Wayne State led 27-24 at halftime and increased its lead to 41-31 at the end of 3 quarters. Phil Klaphake threw for 284 yards and 3 touchdowns in the loss for SCSU. Klaphake ran for 87 yards to lead SCSU on the ground.
