Meteorologists with the National Weather Service will have some new technology to help them when forecasting storms. The agency is spending $50-million nationwide to upgrade their radar to a three-dimensional model.
A weak disturbance moving from northeast Nebraska, to southern Wisconsin by noon, will provide for isolated to scattered showers, and possibility a thunderstorm across far southern Minnesota, and portions of west central Wisconsin.
Summertime heat returns to the region Wednesday with high temperatures warming through the 80s and 90s across the region. Humidity will also be on the increase with heat index values topping 100 degrees over much of southern Minnesota Wednesday afternoon.
Severe weather and other emergency alerts are coming soon to Minnesotans' smartphones and cellphones. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety says it will be ready to send imminent threat alerts by the end of this week.
We had some severe thunderstorm warnings in central Minnesota this (Thursday) morning. Mostly some stronger winds and quarter size hail being reported. Nearly 1 1/2 inches of rain fell with the morning showers.
Isolated weak thunderstorms may be embedded in the showers moving through the state today (Wednesday). Severe weather is not expected. The National Weather Service says much of Central and Southern Minnesota could see 3-5 inches of rain over the next seven days.
