The New York Yankees hit back to back homeruns off Carl Pavano in the first inning before Pavano settled down. Pavano allowed 7 hits and 3 earned runs in 7 innings to get the win. Joe Mauer went 3-4 with a run scored and 1 RBI, Justin Morneau was 2-5 with a solo homerun and Ryan Doumit and Jamey Carroll each had 2 hits for Minnesota.

Twins' catcher Joe Mauer spoke to the media Monday afternoon and says pneumonia caused the premature end to his season. He insisted that the illness was too much for him to play with and he would have if he could have. Mauer played just 82 games this season and hit .287 with 3 homeruns and 30 RBIs.

Mauer has been out since April 12 with leg weakness and has spent the last few weeks rehabbing in Fort Myers, Florida. Mauer spoke a press conference Thursday and stressed the amount of work that has gone into him returning.
