Twins Trade Thome To Cleveland

The Twins have traded designated hitter Jim Thome to the Cleveland Indians for a player to be named later. Cleveland claimed Thome off trade waivers earlier this week and worked out a deal with the Twins Thursday. Thome began his career in Cleveland and spent 12 years there setting a franchise record with 334 homeruns. The Twins will chose from a short list of players as the player to be named later by October 15.

Thome and Kubel Claimed Off Trade Waivers

Twins sluggers Jim Thome and Jason Kubel were each placed on trade waivers earlier this week and ESPN reported Wednesday that both Thome and Kubel were claimed by unidentified teams. The White Sox or Cleveland Indians are believed to be the teams that claimed Thome and the White Sox, Indians, Yankees or Texas Rangers are believed to be the teams that claimed Kubel.

Twins Beat Tigers; Thome Hits #600

The Twins beat the Detroit Tigers 9-6 Monday night and Jim Thome hit a pair of homeruns to get to 600 in his career. Thome hit a 2-run homerun to get to 599 homeruns and then in the 7th inning Thome hit his 600th homerun off lefthander Daniel Schlereth with 2 runners on. Thome had 5 RBIs on the night. Thome is now just 1 of 8 players in Major League history to surpass 600 homeruns in a career.

The Twins lost 7-1 in Anaheim to the Angels Thursday night. Francisco Liriano threw 5 innings with 10 hits and 7 earned runs allowed to take the loss and drop to 7-9. Jim Thome hit a solo homerun, his 9th this season and #598 in his career. Dan Haren threw 8 innings with 5 hits and 1 earned run allowed to get the win and improve to 12-6. Mark Trumbo hit a 3-run homerun for the Angels.

The Twins defeated the Kansas City Royals 4-3 Sunday afternoon to win 3 of 4 games this weekend. Jim Thome hit a 3-run homerun to break the 1-all tie. The homerun traveled 490 feet setting a new Target Field record for longest homerun. Thome's homerun is his 596th.

The Twins rallied to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 9-7 Sunday to win 2 of 3 games against the Brewers on the weekend. Minnesota fell behind 6-1 but scored 3 runs in the 4th inning and added 4 more in the 7th ining to surge in front. Jim Thome hit a solo homerun his 595th in his career and Rene Tosoni hit a 3-run homerun for Minnesota. Danny Valencia and Michael Cuddyer each had 2 hits and 2 RBIs for the Twins.

The Twins earned their 3rd straight win Friday night with a 6-2 victory over Milwakuee at Target Field. The game began nearly 2 hours later than expected because of a rain delay. Minnesota scored 3 first inning runs on a Jim Thome 3-run homerun. The Twins added 2 runs in the 5th inning and got a RBI single from Danny Valencia in the 8th inning. Joe Mauer was 3-4 with 2 runs scored for the Twins.

The Twins are optimistic that catcher Joe Mauer will be activated from the disabled list this week during their current homestand. Mauer has been on the disabled list since mid-April with leg weakness but has been rehabbing at Class A Fort Myers.

The Twins lost 8-7 in 10 innings at home to Seattle Monday night. Minnesota led 7-4 in the 8th inning when a Trevor Plouffe error and struggles from Joe Nathan and Matt Capps did the Twins in. Nathan allowed 2 hits and 2 runs while retiring just 1 hitter. Capps allowed 1 earned run in 1 2/3 innings. Anthony Swarzak gave up a sacrifice fly to Luis Rodriguez in the 10th inning to plate the game-winning run for the Mariners.
