Twins Likely to Part Ways With Marquis; At Chicago Tuesday

The Twins are expected to designate for assignment starting pitcher Jason Marquis today. According to the Star Tribune siting a source within the organization, the team will intend to release Marquis. Marquis is 2-4 with a 8.47 ERA in 7 starts with the Twins this season. Righthander Liam Hendriks is likely to be recalled from triple-A Rochester to take his spot in the rotation. Hendriks is 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA in 18 2/3 innings at triple-A. He had a 9.00 ERA and 0-2 record in 4 starts with the Twins this season.

The Twins lost 6-2 to the Toronto Blue Jays Thursday night in the first game of a 4-game series at Target Field. Jason Marquis allowed 7 hits and 5 earned runs in 4 innings to take the loss and drop to 2-2. Manager Ron Gardenhire wasn't happy with Marquis' strike to ball ratio. Marquis threw 86 pitches, 46 strikes and 40 balls. Josh Willingham hit a solo homerun, his 7th and Erik Komatsu had 2 hits for the Twins. Henderson Alvarez allowed 1 earned run in 7 innings to get the win for the Blue Jays.

The Twins beat the New York Yankees 6-5 in the Bronx Wednesday night. Minnesota scored 4 runs in the first inning of Hiroki Kuroda and Jason Marquis did just enough to get the win. Marquis in his Twins debut threw 5 innings with 4 earned runs allowed to get the win. Justin Morneau led the offense going 3-4 with 2 homeruns, 3 runs scored and 3 RBIs. Alexi Casilla added 3 hits and Chris Parmelee chipped in 2. Matt Capps allowed a solo homerun to Derek Jeter in the 9th inning to get the save.

He's been away from the team for the past 2 weeks attending to his injured 7-year daughter.

Joe Benson hit a 3-run double, Jamey Carroll went 2-3 with 2 runs scored and Ben Revere was 3-3 with a run scored for the Twins. Jason Marquis threw 4 innings with 5 hits and 3 earned runs allowed for Minnesota. Justin Morneau continued to struggle at the plate. He was 0-2 and is hitting .100 this spring.
