The annual Brainerd Jaycees Ice Fishing Extravaganza has been postponed due to safety concerns. The charitable ice fishing contest was scheduled for Saturday, January 23rd on Gull Lake but inconsistent ice thickness caused by the relatively warm winter has forced it to be postponed until Saturday, February 6th.
The Brainerd Jaycees Ice Fishing Extravaganza - the largest ice fishing contest in the world - is being held for the 25th time tomorrow (Saturday). Sarah Stenerson has been involved with the event since 2006. She says over 10,000 ice fisherman will travel to Brainerd to take part in the annual contest that raises money for Minnesota charities.
As many as 12,000 anglers will wet a line on Gull Lake's Hole in the Day Bay Saturday for a chance at winning a new pickup truck, four-wheeler or ice castle fish house.
