Crews are working from the ground and air to try to stop a prescribed fire that escaped from its containment lines in the Superior National Forest west of Ely.
As catastrophic forest fires burn across the western United States, forest managers in northern Minnesota are laying the groundwork for a deliberate fire in hopes of preventing similar blazes.
A forest fire in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area has more than tripled in size and is now burning more than 60,000 acres in northeastern Minnesota. Minnesota Interagency Fire Center spokeswoman Jean Bergerson says strong winds are expected to further spread the fire Tuesday and Wednesday.
