The University of North Dakota's Board of Higher Education decided Monday to retire the Fighting Sioux nickname by the year's end. This move anticipates lawmakers will soon repeal a law requiring the school to keep the nickname. The board voted unanimously to restart the process of dumping the nickname and a logo depicting the American Indian warrior, symbols the NCAA contends are offensive.

Authorities are beefing up security for this weekend's college hockey series in Grand Forks between rivals North Dakota and Minnesota. During a Sioux-Gopher game in October 2009, two fights broke out in Ralph Engelstad Arena on the UND campus.
