Forecasters say temperatures will struggle to climb above zero across much of the state again today (Tuesday). The dangerous cold forced some area schools to start late this morning.

The National Weather Service is scrapping the use of "extreme cold" watches and warnings in the Upper Midwest in favor of the more familiar wind chill advisories and warnings. The weather service experimented with the "extreme cold" advisories in North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota to emphasize that dangerous cold does not necessarily depend on wind.

The National Weather Service in the Dakotas and Minnesota will not be issuing wind chill warnings this winter, opting instead for the "extreme cold" statements that debuted last winter.
