The Vikings play their final preseason game tonight when they host Houston at Mall of America Field inside the Metrodome. Rookie Christian Ponder gets the start at quarterback with Joe Webb set to replace him at halftime. The Vikings will play without running backs Adrian Peterson, Toby Gerhart and Lorenzo Booker. The starters will either not play at all or play sparingly tonight. Starting quarterback Donavan McNabb will not play.

The Vikings announced Monday that rookie Christian Ponder will get the start at quarterback Thursday night in their final preseason game against Houston. Kickoff Thursday night at 7pm, pregame on WJON at 6:00. Ponder will likely play the first half with Joe Webb playing the 2nd half. The two players are competing for the #2 quarterback job behind starter Donavan McNabb.

The Vikings lost 14-3 Saturday night in their preseason opener at Tennessee against the Titans. Minnesota trailed 14-0 at halftime and scored its only points on a 37-yard field goal from Ryan Longwell. Donavan McNabb started the game and was 6-11 passing for 40 yards. Joe Webb was 4-8 passing for 45 yards and he ran for 33 yards on 5 attempts. Rookie Christian Ponder played most of the 2nd half and was 8-13 passing for 84 yards.

The Vikings signed the remaining unsigned draft picks including first round quarterback Christian Ponder Sunday. Ponder was taken with the 12 overall pick in the April NFL draft and is expected to begin the season as the backup quarterback to veteran Donavan McNabb. Ponder will be at camp today while McNabb cannot practice with the team until Thursday per the new collective bargaining agreement.

The Vikings introduced quarterback Donavan McNabb at a press conference Friday. Minnesota traded for him with Washington earlier this week. McNabb says "I want to win now and I want to win here". He expects to be the starter but says he's willing to work with young quarterbacks Joe Webb and Christian Ponder. McNabb cannot practice with the Viking until the new NFL fiscal year begins August 4.

Vikings rookies Christian Ponder and Kyle Rudolph have worked out together since they were drafted in Florida and now in Minnesota as part of Larry Fitzgerald's organized offseason workouts. Ponder was throwing passes to Viking receiver Jaymar Johnson and Rudolph this season and Ponder has been living with Rudolph in his guest room while he looks for a place in live in Minnesota.

Viking rookie quarterback Christian Ponder organized informal workouts for some Viking players. Ponder and quarterback Joe Webb worked out at a Florida football academy Tuesday with receivers Sidney Rice, Emaunel Arceneaux, Percy Harvin and tight ends Visanthe Shiancoe and Kyle Rudolph. Players arn't able to workout with coaches or at their team's facility because of the current NFL lockout.

The Vikings drafted quarterback Christian Ponder of Florida State in the first round with the 12th overall pick in the NFL draft Thursday night. Minnesota tried to trade down from the 12th pick but could not so they picked Ponder at that spot. Ponder was a 3-year starting quarterback at Florida State and threw for a career high 20 touchdowns with 8 interceptions in 2010.
