NORTH MANKATO (AP) — Police say a man shot and wounded himself after a chase in the Mankato area.

The North Mankato Police Department says officers were called about 11:30 p.m. Saturday on suspicion that the 27-year-old man was violating a protection order.

Police say the man fled in his SUV, brandishing a handgun before getting on southbound U.S. 169.

Despite driving over "stop sticks" that police had put down, the suspect kept going with flat ties before heading back toward North Mankato.

A State Patrol officer used his squad car to ram the man's vehicle off the road. During negotiations with law enforcement, the man shot himself and surrendered.

Police say the man is being treated at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester. His condition was not immediately known.
