ST. CLOUD -- Stearns County will be asking the legislature for permission to change their county recorder position from an elected post to an appointed one.

County Administrator Mike Williams says other large counties have already made the change as land management practices have changed.  He says it would allow for better collaboration within the records system and more efficiency.

Williams says current Recorder Diane Grundhoefer doesn't plan to seek re-election when her term expires in 2018. He says Benton County is also making the move with their recorder position.

Williams says Stearns County may look at doing the same thing with the auditor-treasurer position at some point too. In fact, he says a bill is being floated in St. Paul to make the auditor-treasurer position appointed for all Minnesota counties.
