WAITE PARK -- Stearns County will be giving away free radon test kits Wednesday.

The county has secured 200 of the kits from the Minnesota Department of Health to give away to residents who want to test their homes for radon.

Radon is a naturally-occurring gas in the soil which can seep into your home through cracks in the foundation, sump wells or other areas. It is a colorless, odorless radioactive gas that can lead to lung cancer.

The Minnesota Department of Health estimates that 40% of Minnesota homes may have dangerous levels of radon.

The kits can be picked up Wednesday from 8:30-Noon in room 121-B of the Stearns County Service Center near Mills Fleet Farm.

The kits will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis.
