ST. CLOUD -- Holdingford residents will be the first in Stearns County to be able to drive golf carts on county roads.

The board of commissioners approved Holdingford's application to allow the golf carts today.

The board had approved an ordinance last month that would allow the golf carts in cities that had an existing ordinance in place and already allowed them on city streets.

Residents will be allowed to drive golf carts on portions of county roads 9, 17 and 62 within the city limits where the speed limit is 30-miles-per-hour.

Operators will need to buy a $10 permit and will have the same rights and duties as other drivers. The permits are available at Stearns County License Centers. A driver's license and proof of insurance are required.
