ST. PAUL-- St. Paul police say a man is dead after being shot by police.

In a news release, St. Paul police said officers working on an investigation Thursday encountered a man inside a bedroom in a residence. Police said in the release that preliminary information indicates the man "fired at officers."

The release says the man was struck when an officer or officers returned fire. According to police, medics responded and pronounced the man dead without him being taken to a hospital.

Police say no officers were hurt, and that the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension will conduct the investigation into the incident. According to police, the Ramsey County Medical Examiner is working to confirm the exact cause of the man's death and his identity.
