ST. CLOUD - The VA has begun a nationwide initiative called a "Summer of Service". The St. Cloud VA is focusing on several areas, as part of their "Summer of Service". Reaching out to Veterans with a number of community events, increasing volunteering, recruiting medical professionals, and connecting with veterans.

Reaching out to Veterans: The St. Cloud VA is participating in numerous community events this summer to connect Veterans with their health care benefits. Community and service organizations who want to help connect Veterans to the VA are encouraged to contact Kerri Schwegel, Outreach Coordinator, at 320-255-6353. Veterans may apply for enrollment by contacting their local County Veteran Service Officer, calling the St. Cloud VA Eligibility Office at 320-255-6340, or by visiting http://www.stcloud.va.gov/patients/eligibility.asp.

Increasing Volunteering: The St. Cloud VA has an outstanding volunteer program, and there are many opportunities for people to get involved at the medical center in St. Cloud or at VA clinics in Alexandria, Brainerd and Montevideo. Students, aged 13 and older, are encouraged to volunteer during the Summer of Service. Connecting with Veterans: Over the course of the summer, several events are planned which provide opportunities for individuals, Veterans service organizations, local communities, private sector and non-profit organizations, and VA employees to connect with Veterans and support the national commitment to care for those who “have borne the battle” and their families.

June 5          Former POW Recognition Ceremony, 10 to 11:15 a.m., Auditorium (Bldg. 8), St. Cloud VA Medical Center.

June 10         Veterans Town Hall Meeting, benefits fair at 4 p.m., followed by meeting at 5 p.m., American Legion Post 59, 613 Legion Drive, in Montevideo.

June 20         Thanks for Freedom Concert, 1 to 4 p.m., Circle Parking Lot, St. Cloud VA Medical Center.

June 22         Understanding TBI and Family Relationships for Caregivers, 1 to 3:30 p.m., St. Cloud VA Medical Center, RSVP to 320-252-1670, x7283.

July 21          Mental Health Summit, 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Holiday Inn, St. Cloud.

Sept. 9          Veterans Town Hall Meeting, benefits fair at 4 p.m., followed by meeting at 5 p.m., in Brainerd (location to be announced).

Sept. 19        3rd Annual Veteran Rendezvous, 1 to 4:30 p.m., St. Cloud VA Medical Center.
