ST. CLOUD -- A fishing duo from St. Cloud State University's have turned their hobby into a sport.

Souvan Yang and Troy Switajewski are students at SCSU and part of the schools Bass Fishing Club.

"I did a lot of fishing back home and when I came to SCSU I wanted to see if their was a club active up here," says Yang.

"It's just a good group of guys who get together and do a few tournaments in the summertime," says Switajewski.

After qualifying in an opener earlier this year, the team will cast their lines this weekend at the FLW College Fishing Tournamentin Kentucky.

"We went to an opener in Iowa where we had to place in the top 15 and were able to take 14th place," says Yang.

Switajewski says the club tries to send club members to one of the three qualifying events each year.

"These are big tournaments, they get all these colleges together and they really get your name out there and you learn a lot of things," says Switajewski.

The duo will compete against 45 other teams for a chance at the 2015 College Fishing National Championships.

"There's a lot of good fishermen in this regional so we are just going to have to fish smart and make the right choices," says Switajewski.

Yang and Switajewski have fished a few tournaments together and they feel that plays into their favor.

"He has taught me a lot of techniques when we've competed and it's been helping me win my tournaments," says Yang.

They hope to take the lessons they've learn from previous tournaments into this weekends competition.

"I think I have adapted well in my previous tournaments and hope to make that happen again this weekend," says Yang.

"You have to put in a lot of time and energy into it just like any other athlete does," says Switajewski. "They train and we do the same thing we fish and figure things out."

Anglers will hit the water beginning at 6:30 a.m. tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday.
