ST. CLOUD - With classes now at full speed at St. Cloud State University, the Public Safety Department on campus has the goal of creating a safe learning environment for its thousands of students.

Uniformed Public Safety Officers respond to all safety, security, or medical requests for assistance on campus.

Public Safety Officers also provide safety through services like on-campus escorts.

"We do about 5,000 escorts a year, up to about four blocks from campus" Jennifer Super, the Interim Director of Public Safety said.

Other services offered by the department include supporting the campus bus services, monitoring the emergency campus "blue lights", and to present safety awareness programs to St. Cloud State Students.

"We do like to consider ourselves a department supportive to the overall safety of our students" Super said.

This year Public Safety will also be working with full time St. Cloud Police Department officers on Campus as part of a contract with the University. Three Officers will be assigned to the University and neighborhood. The goal is to have Public Safety Officers learn from and work closely with these officers to create a safe campus.

If a St. Cloud State Student is ever in a dangerous situation, Public Safety says the student should always call 911 first for emergency needs and to then call Public Safety at 320-308-3333
