ST. CLOUD - A St. Cloud man is facing several charges after an early morning attempt to steal multiple cars.

St. Cloud Police were called to an attempted car theft at Highway 23 and Lincoln Avenue Southeast around 6 a.m. this (Wednesday) morning.

Police say 44-year-old Zachary Tyler Taylor approached a dark colored sedan stopped at a light in the east bound lane of Highway 23 at Lincoln Avenue.

Officials say Taylor tried to open the door while yelling at the occupants, who drove away. Taylor then stopped at the Gateway Motel where he tried to open several locked and unoccupied vehicles. He eventually knocked on the door of different rooms until one renter opened the door, which lead to a physical struggle. Taylor then took a fire extinguisher from the motel and headed to the Shopko parking lot. An officer arrived at that time, attempting to subdue Taylor. Police say Taylor sprayed the officer with the fire extinguisher before being taken into custody. The officer was treated and released from the St. Cloud Hospital.

Taylor is being held at the Benton County Jail on charges of felony assault, burglar and attempted robbery.
