ST. CLOUD - The city of St. Cloud already has a policy of installing sidewalks, when they work on road projects.  But now there's a move afoot to create a city ordinance to make it mandatory.

City Planner Matt Glaesman says there are a lot of benefits to having a comprehensive sidewalk network.

The installation of sidewalks has been a contentious issue, with some residents raising concerns about maintenance, assessments, and the loss of yard space.

The St. Cloud Planning Commission will take up the issue with a public hearing tonight at 6:00 p.m. at city hall.

The city council would also have to hold a public hearing on the issue before the ordinance could be written into the city's Land Development Code.
