ST. CLOUD - The unemployment rate went up in January in the St. Cloud metro area. The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development says we were at 4.8 percent in January. That compares to the 3.7 percent we had in December.

Analysts say it's typical for the unemployment rate to rise after the holiday shopping season. By comparison, the local unemployment rate in January of last year was 5 percent.

Compared to the statewide average, we're not faring as well, the state's unemployment rate for January was 3.7 percent.
