ST. CLOUD - The St. Cloud City Council has unanimously approved adding as many as 65 street lights to the alleys in the neighborhood near St. Cloud State University.

The plan is to put two lights in each alley on already existing poles, in an effort to make the area safer for the students and residents who live there.

However, how to pay for those extra lights created a debate between council members and city staff. The proposal was to charge an additional $1 per unit for property owners in that area, which would generate about $12,000 a year. But the total cost to operate those lights is expected to be just under $7,400 a year.

The council voted to table a plan on charging an additional lighting fee, pending more information from the staff.
