ST. CLOUD - A man has been arrested after allegedly exchanging gunfire with a deputy.

Benton County Sheriff Chief Deputy Troy Heck says the incident began at about 6:00 p.m. this (Thursday) evening when dispatch received a call from a man stating he was "going to a storage facility and shoot some rounds off with his gun, just for fun".

The man hung-up before dispatch could get a location, or more information, from the man.

A Benton County deputy then found a man sitting in a chair with a gun, at Airway Storage on 2nd Street southeast and 35th Avenue Southeast, in Minden Township just east of St. Cloud.

Heck says as the deputy approached the man, he raised his gun and fired.  The deputy returned fire, then retreated for cover at his squad car.

The suspect then took off in his vehicle.  A perimeter was set-up and the suspect was found in a wooded area at about 8:45 p.m.  Forty-three-year-old Christopher Knyphausen of Litchfield was arrested without further incident.

Heck says neither Knyphausen or the deputy were hurt in the incident.

Benton County sheriff's deputies, St. Cloud police officers, and the Minnesota State Patrol all responded, including the State Patrol helicopter.
