St. Cloud Cathedral football coach Dean Taylor has announced his intention to retire from coaching after a 46 year career. Taylor's career also included stops at Truman High School, Sartell High School and St. John's University.

A Minnesota State-Mankato graduate, Taylor coached first at Truman from 1967-69, then at Sartell from 1969-99. At Sartell, Taylor compiled a record of 178-77 while compiling nine conference championships and a state championship in 1994.

Taylor, who was elected to the Minnesota Football Hall of Fame in 2004, called in to talk with Granite City Cafe Co-Hosts Lee Voss and Dave Overlund on Monday morning.

He said it was a difficult decision to step away from coaching, but added that his health gave him little choice.

The coach talked about what he hopes he has left behind as a legacy in Central Minnesota.

The coach said the game has not changed as much as the players have since he began coaching in 1967.
