MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The cities of Minneapolis and St. Cloud will be the sites of Somali independence day celebrations over the weekend.

Local Somalis have planned the festivals to celebrate their homeland's independence, and to pay homage to the United States - the country that has given refugees the opportunity to start a new life.

An outdoor festival will be held on Saturday in Minneapolis. The event is from 1 to 8 p.m. on Lake Street, between Blaisdell and Grant avenues. It will feature music, artists and Somali food.

A similar event is being held Sunday in St. Cloud.

The nonprofit group Ka Joog says this is the time of year when the Somali community builds ties with other communities. Ka Joog executive director Mohamed Farah says all are welcome to participate.
