UNDATED -- Last year there were 13 snowmobile related deaths in Minnesota and many more injuries. The statistics come as DNR officials are reminding snowmobilers to brush up on their safety skills.

Captain Mike Hammer says it starts with a snowmobile safety course. Anyone born after December 31st, 1976 is required to take the course.

A CD-Rom version is available for adults.

For experienced riders, Hammer says it's the big three reminders...slow down, don't overdrive your headlights and avoid alcohol. Hammer also says be respectful of private property owners by staying on the trail.

Other safety tips include, checking the weather conditions before heading out, watch for thin ice, and come to a complete stop at intersections.
