ELK RIVER -- Sherburne County is supporting moms who choose to breastfeed their babies.

The Minnesota Department of Health has given the Breastfeeding Friendly Health Department Award to Sherburne County Health and Human Services Public Health Division.

The county was recognized for being committed to supporting breastfeeding moms through the health department, workplaces, maternity centers and childcare facilities.

Awards are designated at three levels, gold, silver and bronze. Sherburne County was awarded at the silver level. Levels are achieved by how many number of steps organizations meet in a 10-step process.

Breastfeeding is a way for babies to get the best nutrition possible. Studies show infants that are breastfed have overall better health as they grow.
