WAITE PARK - Sell them, or destroy them?  The Waite Park City council will decide tonight (Monday) what to do with confiscated guns.

Waite Park Police Chief Dave Bentrud says the city has no policy on the books.  He says he's asking for direction from the council because they've collected about nine guns since he took over as the  Chief of Police three years ago.

He says he would prefer to destroy the assault rifles and the illegal guns.  But he's fine with selling the rifles to a federally licensed firearms dealer.  But, he says he understands how that could be controversial.  And he says there have been cases around the country where guns that were once in evidence rooms are stolen from a dealer and used in crimes.

There's no uniform state law on the issue, and it's up to individual cities to decide what to do with the weapons.

Tonight's Waite Park Council meeting starts at 6:30 p.m.
