The St Cloud State Huskies continued their improbable postseason run with a 4-1 win over Miami (OH) in the NCAA Tournament Sunday afternoon in Toledo, OH. The Huskies topped Notre Dame on Saturday to open the tourney.

The Huskies were once again propelled to a win by freshman Joey Benik. After tallying just three goals in the regular season, Benik scored two for a total of four in the tourney.

The frosh Benik struck first with a goal at 5:28 of the opening period from the doorstep of the goal mouth for a 1-0 lead that would hold until the first intermission. Miami outshot SCSU 9-6 in the first period.

Benik struck again at 5:36 of the second period from Brooks Bertsch and Kevin Gravel for a 2-0 Huskies lead. Miami got a power play goal at 7:50 of the second period, but SCSU regained a three goal lead when Cory Thorson scored at 10:12 (assisted by Benik) to make the score 4-1. The Huskies outshot the RedHawks 10-5 in the second for a 16-14 advantage through two.

Cory Thorson’s empty net goal with 0.2 seconds remaining in the third period sealed the win for the Huskies and sent them to their first ever NCAA Frozen Four.
